"...full blown dictatorship"~Jack Cafferty, CNN 5/11/06
Here's what CNN's Jack Cafferty said today on Wolf Blitzer's show, "The Situation Room":
CNN's WOLF BLITZER: ...[some wisdom] from Jack Cafferty in New York. CNN's JACK CAFFERTY: I don't know about wisdom but you'll get a bit of outrage. We better hope nothing happens to Arlen Specter, the Republican head of the Judiciary Committee, because he might be all that's standing between us and a full blown dictatorship in this country. He's vowed to question these phone company executives about volunteering to provide the government with my telephone records and yours, and tens of millions of other Americans. Shortly after 9-11, AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth began providing the super secret NSA with information on phone calls of millions of our citizens, all part of the war on terror, President Bush says.Why don't you go find Osama Bin Laden and seal the country's borders and start inspecting the containers that come into our ports?The President rushed out this morning in the wake of this front page story in USA Today and he declared the government's doing nothing wrong and all of this is just fine.Is it? Is it legal? Then why did the Justice Department suddenly drop its investigation of the warrantless spying on citizens? Because the NSA said Justice Department lawyers didn't have the necessary security clearance to do the investigation. Read that sentence again. A secret government agency has told our Justice Department that it's not allowed to investigate it. And the Justice Department just says okay and drops the whole thing.We're in some serious trouble here boys and girls. Here's the question."Does it concern you that your phone company may be providing your phone records to the government without your knowledge or permission?"If it doesn't it sure as hell ought to.

Well right now, it appears that AT&T, Bellsouth, and Verizon are the biggest contributors of our phone records to the NSA. I'm not sure about Sprint, but cell phone companies such as Cingular is part of either Verizon or AT&T. Qwest has said that they would not allow the government to have their records because there was no court order involved. Also, Vonage has come out and said the very same thing, but I am very leary of Vonage because this is a 'new kind of phone' and if you've ever watched their 30 minute infomercials you would know that they provide a device to attach to your phone, you don't have to change your number and you can also have call-waiting, call-forwarding, and caller ID....all for $25.00/month....and you can call everyone in the nation and everyone in Canada. Sound too good to be true? I think so! Hey, we have found out in the past few years that Brewster Jennings was a CIA created company that Valerie Plame was working for to spy on the Iranian nuclear program. So, with that in mind, wouldn't it be interesting to find out that the CIA also created a phone company (and only charging us $25.00/month!) to spy on us too! Could be. A friend online called Vonage and they swore up and down that they have no connections to the NSA or the Federal government. Uh huh. Nothing surprises me these days! I can't trust them and wouldn't put anything past them. (Oh yeah...Vonage came to be in 2001)

I read about Working Assets on another blog and many were saying they loved it! They loved the fact that they get Ben & Jerry's ice cream coupons every month. Hey, any phone company that treats you like your grandmother would is a good company for sure!
You know what else makes me think Vonage is being used by the government (or is part of the government) because Bush is always saying that Osama and the terrorists are using a 'new kind of phone'! What the hell? I've never trusted the Vonage product because it seemed so creepy to me, and now that you've laid it out for us, I think I might be on to something!!! Incredible. Every day I wake up to the Bush reality and it makes me want to smash my head against the wall. I despise them all.
