The Gates Bait and Switch

In his Senate confirmation hearing, Defense Secretary Designate Robert Gates boldly proclaimed in his questioning that " The United States was not winning the war in Iraq."

Gates drew praise from both Democrats and Republicans for his "candor" and his "promise" to give his "unvarnished opinion" to the President.

Gates even said the U.S went to war with far few troops, as some generals had been admonished for saying.

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow later said that Bush disagrees with Gates, and Bush feels the U.S is winning the war in Iraq.

Now that the Senate, both Democrat and Republican have tripped over themselves to endorse and quickly confirm Gates, the public wonders.

Will Gates stick to his profession that the "U.S was not winning the war in Iraq" or will he suddenly cow to the Bush mantle that all is well, even in Iraq.

Will Gates really tell Bush the "unvarnished truth" or will that varnish have a few spots for change?

Will Gates adhere to the Bush philosophy and "Stay the Course" no matter how disasterous the course will be?

If Gates really does stand up to Bush and "tells it unvarnished" will Gates last long?

Maybe Gates said what the whinalogues in Congress wanted to hear so they could get on with meeting with lobbyists.

Lets see how long Gates will "tell it unvarnished" before we see the real Gates "Bait and Switch."

Hi Larry,

Thanks for stopping by. I see that you are quite interested in political stuff ...you have TWO political commentary-themed blogs.

You and I are both singing off the same hymnal page. I occasionally write political rants, though I haven't been quite as fired up since the election since it didn't turn out horrible.

Based on your blog entries and links, you seem really thoughtful about these matters. I've sort of grown sufficiently cynical that I just make fun of the other side rather than trying to win folks over who might be persuaded. For instance, w/r/t Ann Coulter ... or anyone on the Fox News Channel. They are not meant to be taken seriously.

But in the end, I realize, it all is just a media food fight and the country isn't any better off. Some progressives would make thoughtful, good political leaders. I'd make a good pundit on a scream-fest show for our side...

If it's okay with you, I'd like to add you at some point to my blog links because I find the political commentary interesting.

Oh, yes, you had an entry on Dec. 1 "More GOP Perversion" ... to quote Joe Conason, "the topic of rightwing sexual hypocrisy is inexhaustible."

Arcturus,

Thanks for the nice comments. The two blogs belong to Kay in Maine, she asked me to contribute to it.

I'm sure she would welcome a link and since you were here, I imagine she will visit yours.

I found your site from your post on Meander about Ann Coulter so I will now make it part of my viewing.
