Susan Collins is my "Rhonda"
Okay I admit it! After I read an article sent to me today from an online friend about Susan Collins, I'm now flashing back to 1982 when my friend Rhonda betrayed my trust! Ewwwwwwww, how I hate to go back there but I'm not surprised the memories came streaming back in once I was done reading. I'm not going to bore you with all the gory details, but let's just say in 8th grade, Rhonda told me over and over and over again that she didn't like a thing about the guy I was dating ("He's not my type Kay"..."I could never date him" or my favorite, "He's weird. I don't agree with anything he says or does!"), but as soon as he and I broke up, she was holding hands with him down the hallway and they were an exclusive item by the end of the next period class! So how does this lovely little act of betrayal connect to Susan Collins? Let's just say as of this moment, I can no longer trust either one of them ever again!
Senator Susan Collins of Maine was the deciding vote in Trent Lott's win of the Republican Whip position this past week. Collins a few years ago refused to back Lott on his bid for this same position because of comments he made at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party. Lott made racial remarks at that party (he has a history of making these off the cuff remarks, so this was not an isolated incident) and Susan Collins was disgusted by his actions and worked feverishly along with Sen. John Warner to make sure this man did not get this position because she didn't think he was good representative of her party. Well, Collins is now my "Rhonda" where she goes around telling me and everybody that she doesn't like this guy and after everyone is feeling secure in the idea that she's being truthful, would never back a racist (or date my boyfriend before the dust even settles!), and is standing up for her own convictions and integrity, ole Susan turns around at the last minute and proclaims her love for Lott (or holding hands down the hall...oh the pain of it all!) by being the deciding vote to make him happy! Oh for the love of the Banana Cupcakes...can I not have any more "Rhondas" in my life please?!
Kidding aside, I have to say Collin's vote this week is one of many betrayals she has done to my face over the past few years and I've had it with her. There are times when she votes her conscience and the vote reflects a place in her being that is rational and has a lot of Maine common sense, but the more important votes of our times, especially the votes after 9/11, she seems to be wearing her Jackboots more than ever because her votes mirror the ideology of the Bush Administration and she leaves me scratching my head more times than not. Her vote for Lott is the latest betrayal and it's not likely something I will forget anytime soon. Hell, I can't even read an article about her without being reminded of Rhonda at this point, so there is no way in hell I will be able to let this go!
I can't vote for Susan Collins in 2008, which reminds me...she said she wouldn't run for a third term years ago when she was running for the US Senate position originally. She's on her second term and her 2008 run would make it her third. See? I can't trust my "Rhonda" no matter what name she goes by! I've had it.
